In memory of a memorable black Lab

Our neighbors and neighborhood (Hackberry Lane, Mt. Prospect) lost a treasured friend today. Gus, age 10, was put to sleep.

Black labs are known for their friendliness and intelligence. Gus had it in spades! As a pup he was always happy to visit his neighbors. On one occasion Gus entered an open back door of a neighbor and proceeded to play with the children and then fell asleep. After a few frantic hours, dog and owner were reunited.

Gus savored treats. He would "knock" on our back door and impatiently wait for a response. We would offer three biscuits. We are sure Gus could count because after the third one he would hunker down and head home. If we were in the back yard, he would lie in the grass and wait until we delivered the goodies (including popcorn and peanuts a few times).

During winter Gus followed the snow shoveler and waited for the inevitable lift. He would, jump excitedly and lunge as the snow cascaded to the ground.

Gus was a masterful and relentless hunting companion. He had an uncanny ability to track game and retrieve it whether in South Dakota or central Illinois.

Labs live for water. On trips to northern Wisconsin, Gus cavorted in the lake the entire day. No worry about losing him there.

Our neighborhood is a lonelier and sadder place now. The pain of losing a loving pet is felt by everyone. I'm almost sure it will affect his canine buddies - Dusty, Copper and Harley.

Gus earned his keep. He enriched the lives of his family and neighborhood. May he rest in peace.
