Franks does what's right for residents

Your June 5 editorial highlighted the fact that the only McHenry County legislator to support a sales tax holiday in Illinois was state Rep. Jack Franks. All the other area legislators voted against cutting taxes to stimulate the economy and give consumers a much-needed break.

Rep. Franks has been working to get this law passed for years. The sales tax holiday will allow everyone to pay reduced taxes on clothing and school items from Friday, Aug. 6, to Sunday, Aug. 15. It will provide significant savings for families who have children in school as well as for seniors on fixed incomes. The holiday will also stimulate sales and help our local merchants. New York's sales tax holiday helped create 13,000 jobs and increased sales by more than $1 billion when it was implemented.

This is common sense legislation that helps consumers and promotes our businesses. Rep. Franks once again was successful in doing what's right for the citizens of McHenry County. His colleagues ought to follow his example.
