Elginbull; Two men had a strange tale to tell after they spent Independence Day at home drinking beer, police said. A relative told police that while his uncle and cousin were sitting in their backyard on the 400 block of Bowen Court, a dark-colored Ford Mustang drove by and one of its occupants fired a BB gun in their direction. One of the men was shot twice in the chest; the other man was hit once in the thigh, the relative said. Fifteen minutes later, a gold-colored Dodge Durango drove by, traveling in the same direction, and fired two more rounds. However, reports said, when an officer arrived he noticed the men smelled of alcohol and neither appeared injured. One confirmed the shooting story, but the other couldn't remember. bull; A burglar stole a new car stereo during break-ins Sunday of two vehicles in the 1100 block of Hecker Drive, police said. The owner told police she parked Chevrolet Impala in the driveway about 1:30 a.m. Sunday with the doors unlocked. When she returned to the car around 12:30 p.m., she discovered it had been entered and rummaged through, police said. Although nothing was taken from the Impala, there was damage where the burglar tried to remove the stereo, according to reports. She then checked a second car, a BMW, parked on the street and found its stereo had been removed from the dashboard, reports state. bull; A 22-year-old man lost his girlfriend's cell phone, valued at $300 to $400, after leaving it on a store counter while paying for his items, police said. When the man realized he didn't have the phone, he returned to the store, but it was gone, reports state. The incident occurred about 3:20 p.m. on Sunday in the 400 block of Villa Street.Crystal Lakebull; A small fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to a home Sunday afternoon on the 1900 block of Wheatland Drive, firefighters said. The fire started in a plastic garbage bin on the side of the home, spreading to the exterior wall and siding. The fire did not cause structural damage, and no one was hurt. The homeowners evacuated and were able to put out the fire before firefighters arrived. The incident occurred about 1:40 p.m.
