Fox Lake man dead, 3 children injured in single-vehicle crash
A 19-year-old Fox Lake man is dead and three children aged 14 and younger were injured in a single-vehicle crash on the southern edge of Round Lake, Round Lake police officials said.
Michael Hermes was heading north on Wilson Road at 5:29 p.m. Wednesday a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle at the Route 120 intersection, Deputy Chief Francis Foy said Thursday.
The vehicle skidded off the road just north of the intersection and rolled over, Foy said.
Hermes was pronounced dead at the scene, Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller said. Hermes died from trauma to the head and chest, and alcohol and drugs did not play a role in the crash, Keller added.
The three juvenile occupants of the vehicle - ages 9, 11, and 14 - were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in serious condition, Foy said. Police would not identify the children.
The 11-year-old was later taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Wilson Road was closed for about two hours while the accident was cleaned up, Foy said.
The Major Crash Assistance Team from Lake County is assisting in the accident investigation.
