Tennis event raises money for cancer foundation
Algonquin has announced the winners of its Bike Rack Art Contest and installed the five winning racks all over the village.
If you walk around, you'll see the quirky designs of Allen Howard, from Algonquin, Ben Melnick, from McHenry, Arnold Kinast, from Hampshire and Joshua Myers from Chicago - Melnick designed two racks.
They're popping up in places like Algonquin Commons, Martinis on Main and Riverfront Park.
Algonquin is trying to promote cycling and recently launched "Bike Algonquin," with officials posting different bike routes on the village website.
Officials' aim is to reduce air pollution, obesity and the trips people take in automobiles.
"Algonquin is striving to become a bike friendly community, so part of our educational push is to get people out there and riding," said senior planner Katie Parkhurst.
Bike routes are available at www.algonquin.org/bike and a new one is posted every month, with varying degrees of difficulty.
You can also visit the site to view the racks.

Tennis for kids in Algonquin: A charity quickstart tennis event at Jacobs High School last month raised $600 for the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
The quickstart tennis format, in case you're wondering, is specifically designed for children.
They play on a portion of a regular-size tennis court, using shorter nets, smaller rackets and foam tennis balls.
It's a great way for kids 10 years old and younger to learn how to play tennis.
If you're interested, high school tennis coach Jon Betts says he will run another quickstart clinic in the fall.
