Relay for Life planning tri-villages event
Bartlett, Hanover Park and Streamwood residents are actively planning the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event, which will be 6 p.m. Friday, June 25, to 6 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at Community Park at 1919 Walnut Street in Hanover Park.
Teams of eight to 15 participants camp out for 24 hours and take turns walking around a path to symbolize the idea that cancer never sleeps.
Bartlett resident Jaci Kator has participated in Relay for Life activities for five years and is coordinating this year's event for the Bartlett area.
"One in three people will get cancer and by participating in relay, we hope to decrease these statistics," she said.
Kator said cancer hits home for her because her grandmother died of cancer, and her mother is a four-year cancer survivor.
"It keeps me motivated and connected to the event because I see all the research benefits that come from fundraising," Kator said.
Co-organizer Mike Kalke of Bartlett said he also has a deep connection after his mother died of brain cancer 12 years ago. He said participating is important even if you don't have a personal connection because it potentially can save future generations.
"I wanted to give back to the community and do something about this horrible disease, help find a cure, raise awareness and fundraise for charity," Kalke said.
So far, more than $16,000 has been raised, but Kator and Kalke hope to reach their goal of $70,000.
"We want people to attend to see what it's all about and be inspired to come back next year," Kator said.
The event is open to the general community. To register to participate, make a tax-deductible donation, or find more information, visit relayforlifebhps.com or contact Ashley Walsh (847) 368-1166 Option 3 or Jaci Kator (847) 287-8823.
