Cops: Pair dealing heroin in Schaumburg
A Cook County judge set bail at $90,000 and $160,000 each Friday for two Chicago men arrested on charges of selling heroin in a Schaumburg parking lot.
Schaumburg police charged Derrick Coleman, 30, and Brandon Gooley, 26, with delivery of a controlled substance, a class 1 felony that carries a sentence of three to 14 years in prison.
Police arrested the men Thursday in a parking lot in the 1700 block of East Higgins Road following a meeting with a confidential police informant, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mark Javier.
Police watched as the informant met with Coleman and Gooley in a gold Ford Explorer, Javier said. At one point, Gooley got out of the car and retrieved an item from the gas tank after which police converged on the car, Javier said. They recovered 40 individual packages of heroin totaling about 14 grams and $400 cash, which the informant had been given by police to use in the sting, Javier said.
Both men have criminal records.
Coleman, of the 1000 block of 80th St., was sentenced to two years in prison in 2004 for delivery of a controlled substance, Javier said. In 2002, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for possession of a controlled substance and in 2000 he was sentenced to one year in prison on the same charge, Javier said. In 1999, he received two years probation for possession, violated that probation and was subsequently sentenced to one year in prison.
Gooley, of the 5500 block of South Artesian Avenue, received two years probation in 2009 for possession of a controlled substance, Javier said. At the time of his arrest, Gooley was wanted on a 2010 Chicago warrant for soliciting unlawful business.
The defendants next appear in court on July 9.
