Hubble site does not need a 'big box'
We owe a debt to the Daily Herald for keeping us informed of the plans for developing the Hubble Middle School site in Wheaton. After earlier stating that a Costco big box was probably not the best use for the site, we find that it's still under consideration.
Even with good landscaping and design a big box remains just that: a big box, hardly an attractive feature for the middle of our town. And who's to guarantee the success of that big box? Do we really want to risk a large vacant commercial site at that location? Don't forget the long-vacant K-Mart site on North Avenue, the old Zayre site in north Wheaton that was vacant for many years, empty Circuit City locations all around the area and the old Linens 'n Things at Danada. And how much longer will we have the gaping holes that were Bakers Square on Geneva Road and the Jewel in downtown Wheaton?
Rather than pay for studies and/or rely on developers for ideas why not invite local colleges and universities to use the site as a test project for their students? I'm certain that this would generate creative and practical alternatives not yet under consideration.
Perhaps a flexible master development plan would be the best compromise: develop a small portion of the site now while improving flood control and leave green space for future development as economic conditions improve. Here's an idea: Re-route a combined Naperville Road and Main Street through the site, expanding the personality suggested by the landscaping and lamp posts of Naperville Road right into the downtown area? Or develop a river walk type feature that enhances the atmosphere for fine dining and daytime family visits.
Please, let's keep our attention on long-term development, not on quick "solutions."
