Palatine library announces poetry contest winners

In honor of National Poetry month, the Palatine Public Library District held a poetry contest during the month of April. Over 60 poems were submitted and displayed throughout the library from all age groups, including entries from a few local elementary school classes. Participants could enter up to two original poems for their chance to win a Barnes & Noble gift certificate. Here are the winners in each age category:

Adult Category: Bill Mihalik for his poem, "The Lottery."

Teen Category: Bradley Khatib, a seventh-grader, for her poem, "Silly Squares"

Children's Category: Gretchen Coleman, a fourth-grader, for her poem, "My Sewing Project."

In addition, Palatine Library board trustee Nancy Heggem, a published author, donated a personal cash prize to the author of the best poem(s) from each age category. These are the winners of the Nancy Heggem Poetry Award:

John Haugh of Hoffman Estates in the Adult category for his poem, "Thanksgiving at my Sister's Home."

Victoria Halevy, a Fremd High School senior, for her poems: "First Snow" and "A Mother's Handshake."

Holly Chvoy, a second-grader at Hunting Ridge, for her poem, "A Butterfly."

The Palatine Public Library District (www.palatinelibrary.org) serves approximately 90,000 residents predominantly within the communities of Palatine and Hoffman Estates. The Library District's mission is to encourage lifelong learning and enrichment through the exploration of books and other media and to provide services and materials that will promote a well-informed and literate community.
