Teens in Bartlett HS prank ordered to community service
A Cook County judge on Tuesday ordered six teens to perform community service Tuesday as punishment for an ill-conceived prank at Bartlett High School last month.
Bartlett police cited 18-year-olds Zach C. Konstanzer of Hanover Park, Stephen C. Maggard of Bartlett, Kyle M. Davis of Bartlett and three 17-year-olds for engaging in dangerous acts.
Police say the teens poured a combination of baby oil and vegetable oil on several floors and stairwells inside the high school in the early morning hours of May 21.
A custodian and several students were injured after falling on the slippery surfaces, police said. The custodian has returned to work, said school officials who said they were not aware of any further injuries.
Under a deferred prosecution, the six teens must perform 24 hours of community service by Aug. 12, said Bartlett village Prosecutor Robert Krupp. If the teens comply, the citations will not appear on their records, Krupp said.
There were other consequences. School-imposed punishment ranged from suspending the perpetrators for the remainder of the school year, to prohibiting them from participating in school athletics and activities, including graduation, said Principal Kevin Skinkis.
"I'm sure the consequences imposed by the judge today were fair and just," Skinkis said. "Hopefully they'll learn from their mistake and move on."
