League marches on, 55 years young
It's our 55th birthday! And the League of Women Voters Arlington Heights-Mount Prospect-Buffalo Grove Area (including Wheeling, Prospect Heights, and Elk Grove Village) is alive and well!
We are saddened by the disbanding of the Barrington League, a valuable community resource for 71 years. However, in this 55th year of service to our six communities, our League will remain active and continue to present free, public candidate forums and public programs on timely issues. In fact this League held a program on campaign finance reform in 2008 before it became a frequent media subject.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, promotes civic responsibility through the informed and active participation of citizens in government. It works to increase understanding through education and advocacy.
Why does the League deserve your support? A League member may have registered you to vote. Or you may have attended one of League's candidate forums in which the League supports no candidate and no political party. League forums allow citizens to become better acquainted with the candidates running for office and better informed about the issues facing their community.
Since September 2009 this League has presented public programs on health care reform, housing for persons with mental illness, and on the Illinois state budget "structural deficit" crisis. In November the League supported the U.S. Census Bureau education campaign for the 2010 Census by bringing together people from ethnic, social and service agencies; from education; and from local government to learn about the census and to share ideas.
Democracy is not a spectator sport! If you believe our country needs more informed citizens actively involved in addressing the issues facing us today, join the League. Visit www.lwvah.org/ to learn about this League and its activities. Become a member. Membership is open to all adult citizens. Support our free public programs and attend the candidate forum on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Arlington Heights Village Hall. We rely on donations to support our programs. If you would like to help us, use the website to make a tax-deductible donation to the League's educational programs.
