More problems after red-light cameras

Most accidents happen in or near intersections. So, at first it seemed like a good idea to have cameras at major intersections. Having cameras there might be a deterrent to people who go through the intersection when the light changed to red or people who jump the gun by crossing over the crosswalk while their light is still red. Also, cameras could possibly prevent or even help solve a crime.

Sadly, that is not what the cameras at the intersections have done. Drivers are so worried about getting a ticket that they stop on yellow. Clearly, that will cause a rear-end collision and prevent the proper flow of traffic. Also, I do not know anyone who turns right on red any more because they are so worried about getting a $100 ticket in the mail.

I have lived near the intersection of Lake Street and Route 53 in Addison since 2004. From 2004 until 2009, I never knew or heard of anyone getting a ticket there or even having an accident. Since the installation of those cameras, my sister got a ticket in the mail for waiting just 30 seconds before turning right on red. Her friend got a ticket there, too. My aunt had an accident at the same corner last March because she was looking at the light instead of the road.

The tickets come in the mail and you do not have the option of going to court or pleading not guilty or anything. You just mail your check. This does not seem democratic to me at all. I feel that those cameras are not fair. Worse than that, they cause accidents. Could it be that they are just there to make money for the city?
