Runners make like gazelles to help Cosley Zoo
As runners gather at the starting line, they'll know their footsteps will be paving a path for newer animal exhibits down the road.
On Saturday, June 5, about 2,400 people will take part in the Taste of Wheaton's Cosley Zoo Run for the Animals and Zippity Zoo Run.
Though the event usually draws local runners, racers from Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Carol Stream and even Florida will be participating, said Vanessa Peca, Plus Parks Fitness Center manager.
"The community has an appreciation for the run and has gravitated toward the race," Peca said. "It's just an opportunity for the center to come together to put the community and the zoo's efforts at a forefront."
The 5K and 10K races step off at 7:30 a.m. from the corner of Main Street and Seminary Avenue. The children's Zippity Zoo half-mile dash will start at 8:45 a.m.
The course will weave through Wheaton neighborhoods, going north toward Wakeman Avenue, south toward Seminary Avenue, west toward Oak Avenue and east toward Webster Avenue. The course has changed from last year to avoid construction near Northside Park, Peca said.
Medals will be given to the top three Wheaton runners, top male and female runners, and top runners in each age category. Additionally, the first 2,500 registered 5K/10K and 250 Zippity Zoo Run participants will receive a T-shirt and goody bag.
Last year, the run raised more than $50,000 for Cosley Foundation Inc., said Susan Wahlgren, zoo director. The nonprofit foundation has paid for expanding the zoo's parking lot and will help pay for pig and poultry exhibits.
"I think (the runners) feel that the zoo offers a valuable resource to the community," Wahlgren said. "Not only are we providing a facility for Wheaton residents to enjoy free of charge but an important education aspect by offering them programs."
