A family outing: Memorial Day event
I would like to suggest a family outing that I guarantee will be fun, educational and maybe help shape your children's attitudes.
On Memorial Day, towns across America hold brief ceremonies at local cemeteries to remember and honor soldiers who died in the service of our country. These events are usually short (20-30 minutes) and interesting enough for even the most energetic children.
The main ceremony in my town includes veterans in uniform, colorful flags flapping in the breeze and patriotic music by our high school band. There are loud rifle shots with echoing reports in salute to the dead, followed by the somber playing of taps.
Amidst all this pageantry, we the living stand a few feet above the remains of real people whose lives were cut short so that you and I might live in a free America. With just a little imagination, you can see them by the thousands watching us, calling us to live lives worthy of their respect.
Why not put this event on your calendar right now? Your local newspaper will have the times and locations near you. Nothing will help you enjoy this Memorial Day holiday like starting it off with a renewed sense of gratitude for the simple things in life.
No American history course will awaken you children's minds like this short family outing. No parental scolding will motivate your older children to be grateful for all you do as parents like your example of gratitude for these fallen heroes.
