Vet recognition ceremony:Vernon Hills seniors who served in the armed forces will be honored at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 27, in a special ceremony at the veteran's memorial/Arbortheater, 50 Fairway Drive, just north of the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. The event is hosted by the Vernon Hills Police Department, Countryside Fire Protection District, Lincolnshire Riverwoods Fire Protection District and American Legion Post 1247. The seniors will receive an escort to the site, where there will be a roll call with information on each veteran. Each will also receive a proclamation. In case of bad weather, the ceremony will be held at The Park, 145 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills.Hawthorn Woods bike rodeo:Hawthorn Woods police will host a sixth annual bicycle rodeo from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Community Park at Quentin and Old McHenry roads. Officials said the event will include music, food, skills courses and prizes in conjunction with National Bicycle Safety Month. All participants will receive a new, fitted bicycle helmet for free. Police Chief Jennifer Paulus said the event is designed to be fun for the entire family. She said the rodeo is a skills event that provides an opportunity to young bicyclists to practice and develop skills to help them become better bicyclists and avoid crashes. Paulus said the free event's rain date will be Sunday, May 30. Other scheduled action includes a bicycle giveaway to one boy and a girl.Ten years of Gurnee market:Celebrating 10 years, the Gurnee Park District Farmers Market opens at 8 a.m. Friday, June 11, at Esper Petersen Park, Old Grand Avenue at Kilbourne Road. Roughly 35 vendors are expected to participate. The weekly farmers market runs through Oct. 1. In a new twist, the market will host special events each week including free cooking classes, educational workshops, children's crafts and live entertainment.
