Aunt: Aurora Twp. boy hit by trailer has long road to recovery

The aunt of a 3-year-old boy critically injured after he was run over by the trailer on a pickup truck says he has shown some improvement but that they expect him to remain in the hospital for at least several more weeks.

Flory Aquino, whose nephew Fabian Selgado was critically injured on Saturday in the incident, said the hospital has told family members that Fabian suffered broken ribs and possible brain and liver damage. Fabian also cannot yet breathe on his own, Aquino said.

What exactly happened Saturday, however, has not been determined. Kane County sheriff's officials said Sunday the incident remains under investigation. On Saturday, they said that Fabian might have been chasing a ball into the street near the home on the 1100 block of Rural Street at about 11:05 a.m.

Aquino, however, disputes that claim and said she saw the 1996 GMC pickup lose control and veer into the front yard of the home. The driver tried to avoid the child and, in doing so, sent the trailer toward Fabian. Aquino said Fabian was sent to the ground and run over by the trailer.

Fabian was sent to Mercy Medical Center in Aurora and later flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was in critical condition Saturday. Calls to the hospital for an updated condition Sunday were unsuccessful.

Aquino said drivers constantly speed down Rural Street and she hoped police would do more to help residents.

"I'm not hoping the guy goes to jail or anything," she said. "I just hope they do something about the speeding around the streets."

She said the family was most concerned with possible long-term damage her nephew might suffer and that they just hoped for the best with Fabian.

On Saturday, police said in a news release that no arrests had been made and no tickets had been issued to the 36-year-old driver, from Serena. Also, the release said the accident did not appear alcohol- or drug-related.
