Suspect in Fox Lake shooting arrested in Barrington
A reported gang member wanted for shooting a rival in the head during a dispute last month has been arrested, Fox Lake Police announced Wednesday.
Bowen Rice, 23, of Rushmore Road in Fox Lake, was picked up after a botched burglary in Barrington Tuesday afternoon, Barrington Police Chief Jerry Libit said.
Rice was burglarizing a home in the 600 block of Grove Avenue when he was seen by the homeowner about 1:30 p.m., Libit said. The homeowner called police after Rice fled through a back door, Libit said. Officers spotted him running through some yards near the location and chased him on foot.
Police also seized 187 grams of marijuana in a clear plastic bag that Rice was carrying in a grocery bag when he was arrested, Libit said.
Rice was charged with burglary and a felony count of possession of marijuana, Libit said. Bond was set at $90,000 Wednesday, and he is held in Cook County jail.
Rice was wanted in Fox Lake for firing a small-caliber hand gun that wounded a 40-year-old McHenry County man near the Shell Gas Station at Forest and Grand avenues, Fox Lake police Chief Mike Behan said.
Behan said Rice and the victim were members of rival gangs that had been antagonizing each other before the shooting. He said both groups were at the location at 5:30 p.m. April 19 when the shooting took place.
The victim was taken by Flight for Life to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, but was released shortly after, Behan said.
"Barrington did a wonderful job with this," he said. "We are very happy he was picked up and this entire incident has been resolved."
Rice was charged with aggravated battery of a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm, Behan said. If found guilty of both charges, he could spend up to 60 years behind bars, Behan said.
Should Rice be able to post bond in Cook County, he will be transferred to Lake County bond court, Behan said.
Behan said the shooting remains under investigation and charges could be filed against others who were involved.
