Celebrating diversity only polarizes us

This is an opposing opinion in response to the letter, "Look at the real impact of the Latino community."

We are a nation of immigrants and immigrants that have a desire to enter and remain in this country have an obligation to contribute to its collective moral character and abide by the laws we have established through formal legislation.

It becomes secondary and irrelevant to the quality of life of how many houses people buy, or how many jobs they occupy. These actions do not reveal what an individual holds within on true values of life, prosperity, and charity.

The highest form accepting diversity is to not place such emphasis on a special culture or ethnicity; we have multitudes of people from all nations. As it has been stated "Judge the person on their merits, not their color." The statement made in original article; "the future of all Illinoisans - Latino and otherwise are intertwined" is at best a slight to the remaining aggregated other cultures.

When race-dominated organizations such as Latino Policy Forum, MALDEF, and LaRaza work contrary to laws of this land, and clearly do not support reduction in crime, it becomes obvious members will do whatever is necessary to advance their own interests.

This effort often at the expense of the greater community with little regard for safety and general health of all.

I ask, "When do these organizations publicly support the immigration laws that are in place? When do these organizations cease aiding and abetting, and hold people of their own race accountable that violate our laws?"

A truly diverse society captures the best qualities of its immigrants, assimilates to a common language, and demonstrates an unselfish attitude to advance the greater whole. The best way to ensure assimilation and celebrate diversity is to drop the messaging that our race is special.
