Byfuglien no factor in Game 5

The Vancouver Canucks tried not to be as preoccupied with Dustin Byfuglien in Game 5 on Sunday night and the strategy worked.

Byfuglien, who was the difference in Games 3 and 4 in front of the Vancouver net, wasn't a factor in the Blackhawks' 4-1 loss in Game 5 at the United Center.

Byfuglien was minus-2 with 1 shot on goal and took two penalties minutes apart in the second period for slashing and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Kevin Bieksa scored a power-play goal during Byfuglien's first penalty to make it 3-0.

Byfuglien couldn't get to the net as much as he did in Vancouver.

"I don't know if he didn't get there or we didn't put enough pucks there to create what was necessary," Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "I think we were looking for too many plays, but they checked pretty well. Give them some credit."

Byfuglien had a hat trick in Game 3 and helped clear space in front for Jonathan Toews to get 3 goals in Game 4.

"I'm standing there and they're not worried about Toews and (Patrick) Kane," Byfuglien said before the game. "They're worried about me and it gives them more room to operate."

Quick exit: Jonathan Toews was surprised to see the Red Wings go out in five games in their semifinal series with San Jose.

"It's tough to imagine that happened so quick," Toews said. "That's a heck of a team and it was surprising to see them go out in five games."

It'll be another interesting off-season in Detroit starting with defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. The 40-year-old Lidstrom said after Saturday's loss to the Sharks that he hadn't made up his mind about playing next season."

Not pretty: Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews were razzing each other Sunday morning about how they looked.

Kane has sported a playoff mullet for weeks while Toews has a playoff beard that is heavy on the big sideburns.

"How does your agent let you walk around like that?" Toews said.

Tip-ins: Canucks coach Alain Vigneault had Pavol Demitra back in the lineup Sunday and sat Tanner Glass. - The Canucks lost defenseman Sami Salo as the first period expired when he was hit by a shot in the groin area from Duncan Keith on a Hawks power play and was taken to the hospital on a stretcher. Vigneault said more would be known about Salo's condition today. - It was the same lineup for the Hawks with Troy Brouwer sitting out a third straight game as a healthy scratch. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Brouwer back in the lineup for Game 6.
