Attempted abduction reported in Wheaton

Wheaton police are searching for a woman involved in an apparent attempted child abduction on Sunday night.

Two young girls - both less than 13 - were playing outside about 6:30 p.m. Sunday on the 1900 block of Lancaster Lane when the lone female suspect stopped in a large white, four-door vehicle near the children and attempted to lure them into the car, according to authorities.

The woman offered to take the girls out for ice cream if they would get into the car and go with her, Deputy Chief Tom Meloni said in a statement.

Meloni said both young girls ran into their home and told their parents, who then called police. The area was searched, but officers weren't able to find the vehicle or the suspect.

Police said the suspect is described as a white or Hispanic woman who is 55 to 65 years old with black and gray hair and a medium brown complexion. She was wearing a gray blouse with a white and blue silk scarf.

The make and model of the suspect's vehicle is unknown, police said. It had rust near the door handles and taillights. On driver's side rear door was a decal consisting of a blue square with black lettering including the letter "L."

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Det. Commander James Volpe at (630) 260-2055.
