Palatine Public Library District honors volunteers
On Wednesday, April 21, during National Volunteer Week, the Palatine Public Library District honored adult volunteers at a luncheon held at Vittorio de Roma in Palatine.
"We are extremely grateful to our volunteers for devoting their time to the library," says Susan Strunk, director. "Volunteers make a vital contribution to our library."
Library volunteers undertake many time-consuming but important tasks such as shelf reading-a process where every book spine on a shelf is examined to ensure that it is in the proper order. Other duties for weekly volunteers include cleaning, re-casing and shelving DVDs and CDs; pulling reserved books for patrons and interlibrary loans; assisting in teen programming; removing books from the collection; stamping date cards and assisting the various departments as needed.
"All of these efforts greatly contribute to a positive experience when patrons search for a book, movie or reference," added Strunk.
The library currently has 41 weekly volunteers who have clocked in 2200 hours of their time during the past year to help the library serve the community. 200 of those volunteer hours were added by 17 members of the Teen Advisory Board. Additionally, the library had 86 volunteers assist with last year's Summer Reading Program by signing up patrons for the program, checking reading logs and distributing halfway prizes.
Most of the volunteers have been helping the library for several years. For information about volunteer opportunities at the Palatine Library call Debbie Pettersen (847) 358-5881, ext. 156.
Palatine Public Library District (www.palatinelibrary.org) serves some 90,000 residents predominantly within the communities of Palatine and Hoffman Estates. The library's mission is to encourage lifelong learning and enrichment through the exploration of books and other media and to provide services and materials which will promote a well-informed and literate community.
