Quenneville, Vigneault share some coaching traits
Editor's note: For the second-round playoff series between the Blackhawks and Canucks, we asked hockey analyst and former player Troy Murray to compare the two head coaches:
Alain VigneaultI played for Alain in Ottawa. He was the assistant coach and (current Canucks associate coach) Rick Bowness was the head coach. Now they've flipped their responsibilities in Vancouver. If you go back to the way Alain played, he was a hard-nosed, character-type player and that's the way he expects his team to play. They compete. He likes the physical element; he understands that that's still a huge part of the game. He expects his team to compete that way. He's smart guy, very dedicated, good with the players. The players have a lot of respect for him.Joel QuennevilleJoel is the same way. As former players, they have a good understanding of the mental things that players go through and they both deal with it extremely well. Joel has a real good understanding of when to push the players and when to lay off, especially when you have a young group of core players. You can't be a drill sergeant every day because that will wear on young players. If you want longevity, you have to pick your spots and I think Joel has done an excellent job of letting the players fight through some adversity on their own and picking times when he wants to be vocal.
