Top achievers honored during Kumon Awards Ceremony

More than 400 students were honored for their academic achievements during an annual awards ceremony hosted by the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Schaumburg Central on March 21, at the Prairie Center for the Arts.

Kumon instructor Dr. Poonam Saxena along with Mayor William D. McLeod presented local preschoolers through high school age students with medals and certificates for reaching Honor Roll status. Other awards were given to those completing Kumon's advanced Math and Reading programs. Middle schoolers Arissa Sato, an eighth grader, and Mohan Chennakesavalu, a seventh grader, who completed Kumon's advanced Math and Reading programs, gave speeches to the crowd of students, friends, family and education supporters.

A total of seven program graduates were presented with scholarships from Kumon of Schaumburg Central, including: Reading: Nirmal Vasani, Jaina Parekh, Kavina Munshi, Mohan Chennakesavalu, and Vamskek Sirinivasan;

and for Math: Arissa Sato and Mohan Chennakesavalu.

"The students work diligently every day, and this is great motivation to keep working hard," Saxena said. "We honor their success as well as acknowledge their parents and teachers for continued support."

Kumon [Koo-mon] is an after-school math and reading program that unlocks the potential of children so they can achieve more on their own. Founded in Japan in 1958, the learning method uses an individualized approach that helps children develop a solid command of math and reading skills. Through daily practice and mastery of materials, students increase confidence, improve concentration and develop better study skills.
