ORLANDO, Fla - Nervous energy pulsed through the ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Monday night. As the music thumped and the lights danced around room, Amy Winters of Bartlett clapped and bounced tentatively to the beat and she and the other 99 finalists in the Pillsbury Bake-Off waited to see who among them would be in line for the $1 million grand prize.
When the names of the four category winners were read, Winters, a mother of three, was not among them. Instead, Niki Plourde of Gardner, Mass., Evelyn Henderson of Roseville, Calif., Kellie White of St. Louis, Mo., and Sue Compton of Delanco, N.J., won their respective Bake-Off categories and will head to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Wednesday to learn which one of them takes the $1 million purse.
"I really wanted to be on Oprah, but I don't want to be a sore loser," Winters said. "I really am happy for all of them.
"This really was fun," the first-time contestant said of the all-expense paid jaunt to Orlando that she took with her husband, Jonathan. "Maybe I'll get to come to another one."
