DeRue, Grayslake Central defeat McHenry

DeRue ruled.

Kevin DeRue fanned nine and scattered 4 hits over 6 innings in leading Grayslake Central's baseball team to a 10-0 blanking of host McHenry in Fox Valley Conference action Thursday.

Grayslake Central (7-1) pounded out 14 hits and were led by Joe Schaiper, who homered, tripled, singled and scored 3 runs. Jackson White added a double and single, Mike Gentile also doubled, and Andrew Hosford and Stefan Falbo each had a pair of singles.

"With the cold weather, I didn't think it would be a hitter's day, but the kids came out swinging," Rams coach Troy Whalen said. "Kevin was very efficient, with only 74 pitches, and we made some nice defensive plays behind him. Anytime you can shut out a good-hitting team like McHenry, that's outstanding."

Grayslake Central travels to Dundee-Crown today.

Vernon Hills 13, Antioch 4: Ryan Lane and the Cougars finished what they started.

In a game that was suspended with two men on in the top of the fifth Wednesday, with the Cougars leading 10-3, Vernon Hills added 3 runs.

Lane allowed only 1 more hit after the fifth. He was supported by some great defense, as catcher Chris Marras threw out two would-be base stealers. The middle infield tandem of Chris Argianas and Nick Mazza combined for 6 putouts and 7 assists, included an inning-ending double play in the fifth.

Lane also helped his own cause by picking off two runners.

CL South 6, Grayslake North 0: Easton Kowalski pitched a no-hitter, striking out 12 and walking three for the Gators.
