Prairie burn planned at Spring Valley Nature Center
Area residents can see and learn about a controlled prairie burn at sunset Saturday at the Schaumburg Park District's Spring Valley Nature Center at 1111 E. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg.
From 7 to 9 p.m., Spring Valley staff will conduct the sunset burn on a part of the prairie participants can see from the safety of the nature center's back yard.
Though prairie fires were an awesome but frightening sight to early Midwestern settlers, staff members will explain why they were and are beneficial to the management of natural areas when done safely.
Refreshments will be served in the nature center after the burn. All ages are welcome to the event, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
The rain date for the event will be one week later, Saturday, April 17.
Preregistration is required for this event, costing $4 for park district residents and $5 for nonresidents.
