Search continues for murdered woman's daughter
Three days after Marina Aksman was found murdered in her Vernon Hills home, police have still not located her 20-year-old daughter Kristina Aksman, who authorities describe as "endangered and missing."
Police want to question Kristina Aksman and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Daniel Baker, of Deerfield, about the death of Aksman, whose body was discovered about 5 a.m. Thursday in a first-floor bedroom of the family home in the 1800 block of Olympic Drive.
According to Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller, Marina Aksman, 50, died as a result of blunt trauma. Funeral arrangements are still pending, Keller said.
Police believe Kristina Aksman and Baker are driving a 2009 silver Nissan Rogue with Illinois license plate 421 9607. Initially police confined their search to the greater Lake County area, but have since expanded it nationwide. Authorities have received a few tips, but none has panned out, police said.
The murder investigation began after a passer-by alerted police that a silver, four-door sedan had crashed into the front of the house, causing the car's air bags to deploy. A Vernon Hills police department spokesman said the car is registered to Baker's parents. An individual who answered the phone Saturday at the Baker's home declined to comment.
During their investigation of the crash, police noticed a rear door had broken glass. They entered the home and discovered the victim, a police spokesman said.
Vernon Hills police and members of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force continue to investigate.
According to court records, Marina Aksman was appointed her daughter's guardian about two weeks ago. A May 2008 letter from her doctor indicates Kristina suffers from a seizure disorder for which she receives treatment. She has also been described as developmentally delayed and "not fully capable of taking care of herself."
