Sock baggies on man arrested in Mt. Prospect suspected to contain drugs

Authorities say Sigfrido Morales had more than his foot in his right sock when Mount Prospect police pulled him over Friday near Algonquin and Dempster roads.

Police stopped the 37-year-old Rolling Meadows man because they suspected he was driving under the influence, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Ina Kantor during Morales' bond hearing this morning in Rolling Meadows. While questioning Morales, the officer noticed a large bulge in his right sock, Kantor said. The officer discovered a large bag with 13 smaller Baggies containing a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine, Kantor said.

Morales had no valid license when he was arrested and has a 2008 conviction for driving without a license, Kantor said.

Morales, of the 4700 block of Algonquin Parkway, said he found the bag in his car after dropping off some friends and put it in his sock until he could dispose of it, said Cook County Assistant Public Defender Kathy Ward.

A Cook County judge set Morales' bail at $25,000. He could face one to three years in prison if convicted. He next appears in court on April 5.
