Father, daughter killed in Ohio plane crash; plane bound for DuPage
DAYTON, Ohio -- The University of Dayton has scheduled a prayer service for a student and her father who were killed in single-engine plane crash.
Kacie Hausfeld, a junior early childhood education major who was on the women's volleyball team, and her father, Thomas Hausfeld, 50, died Thursday in the crash just before 1 p.m. near Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport.
FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said the private plane was headed for the DuPage Airport in suburban Chicago when the pilot reported that a cargo door was open. The Beechcraft Bonanza crashed as Hausfeld tried to return to the runway.
The university's service for the campus community will be 9 p.m. Monday on campus.
"I'm greatly saddened by this terrible tragedy," Daniel J. Curran, University of Dayton president, said in a statement. "This is a very close community, and this kind of loss touches us all deeply."
Tom Hausfeld, a retired businessman, was known as a charitable benefactor for schools, his church and other organizations in southwest Ohio. He had served on Kettering Alter High School's board and was a past boosters club president.
Twenty-one-year-old Kacie Hausfeld and her older sister Ali played on the Alter volleyball team. Tom Hausfeld is also survived by wife Lori.
Friends said he was devoted to his family and to helping, loved sports and had a passion for flying.
