Stevenson roars past Cary-Grove
Stevenson's baseball team got its season started right Saturday.
Northwestern-bound Kyle Ruchim ripped a 2-run home run, and Pat Wilson and Alex Daar each had 3 hits, as the Patriots defeated host Cary-Grove 9-1.
Stevenson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, providing pitcher Greg Kingery all the runs he needed.
Kingery went the distance on the mound, striking out six, walking two and allowing 3 hits. Wilson (2 RBI) and Daar each doubled.
Waukegan 12, Antioch 7: Junior Bob Pranke homered and knocked in a pair of runs for the Sequoits, who also got a triple from junior Alex Grimm.
Senior Cameron Jerina was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Antioch (1-3).
Antioch 6, Waukegan 5: In a game that was started on March 18 and suspended due to darkness, Alex Grimm's single in the eighth inning scored Brett Prather with the winning run. Prather started the rally be singling and then stealing second base.
Grimm finished 2-for-2 with a double. Prather also tripled.
Prospect 5, Lake Zurich 1: The visiting Knights scored 3 runs in the first and never looked back.
Ed Gerdes led Prospect's 11-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Peter Bonahoom was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Lake Zurich (1-3) scored its only run in the fourth, after it trailed 6-0. The Bears had 5 hits.
"Prospect hits the ball real well," Lake Zurich coach Gary Simon said. "They have some real pop. We are not doing the little things that win games right now. When we strand 10 runners and come up with 1 run, you can't expect to win."
Deerfield 1, Lakes 0: Deerfield handed Lakes its first loss of the season.
The game's only run was scored in the top of the first inning when Deerfield opened with three straight singles. Lakes' sophomore starter Chris Hoffman settled down after that and did not allow another hit through his four innings of work. Paul Kukulka threw two scoreless innings in relief for Lakes and Nick Hibbing then worked a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
But Lakes couldn't get any offense going, managing just 3 hits off of Deerfield starter Adam Rhum.
