Busse starts strong for Hersey

Ryan Busse needed one start to match his victory total of last season.

The Hersey senior threw a 3-hitter Wednesday afternoon in a 4-0 nonconference baseball victory at Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin. Busse effectively worked in a changeup and finished with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks.

"It was kind of smooth sailing so we let him go," said Hersey coach Bob Huber of Busse throwing about 100 pitches. "He had some nice, easy innings in terms of his pitch count. They were off-balance a bit and he looked good."

Busse also had 5 assists and started a double play with shortstop Alex Lee. Right fielder Erik Stoltzner made a nice catch along the line to keep runners at second and third with one out in one of the few threats.

Lee also got a 2-run first started with a single and he scored on an error. Domenic Biagini scored on a wild pitch.

BG sweeps Elgin: Ryan Nisbet had a memorable day as Buffalo Grove (3-0) beat visiting Elgin 12-4 and 10-9 in 8 innings. Nisbet went 6-for-9 in the doubleheader and in his varsity pitching debut he went an inning to get the Game 2 victory.

Mike Hepner's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth brought BG back from an 8-2 deficit in the second game. Steve Pollakov was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and Jeremy Salzman (3 RBI) and Andrew Van Wazer had 2 hits apiece.

Nisbet and Hepner (3-for-3) each had 2 doubles in the first game and Brian Crowell had 2 hits.

Christian Liberty 7, Woodstock North 6: Dan Glad had a leadoff double in the top of the seventh and scored the tiebreaking run as visiting Christian Liberty (2-0) held on for the nonconference win.

Chris Valdez also went 2-for-4 with a double and got the victory. Freshman Merek Quaglia pitched around a leadoff triple in the bottom of the seventh for the save.
