Benet has hard time with York

For a while Tuesday it seemed Benet might steal "Duke time" from the Dukes.

Instead York turned the tables on the Redwings to grab a 2-0 nonconference girls soccer victory in Lisle in the season opener for both teams.

"We say 'Duke time' because it's a mental check for our team to recognize where we're at and they need to go hard for those five minutes and make no mistakes," said Dukes coach Rachael Shepherd.

After withstanding 3 quick Benet (0-1) shots to start the second half, York (1-0) broke open a scoreless game in the 48th minute when MaryKate Cicinelli one-timed an Ashley Bowman cross into the net.

The Dukes gave themselves some breathing room in the 64th minute with a Christina Ordonez goal.

"After halftime we just kind of got together and realized what we needed to do and we needed to step it up to win and we came out and did it," Ordonez said.

"I was very proud of the girls," Shepherd added. "The first five minutes of the first half I thought we played really well. After that I felt they outplayed us in the first half. I saw a little bit of an adjustment on the field with the goals. And I knew they were starting to feel a little bit more comfortable with each other.

"With soccer there's no timeouts, so you have to really rely on the players to make those adjustments themselves. And they definitely did. And we recognized as a staff that they were making those adjustments. The second half we came out with a little bit different of an approach."

Benet wasn't worrying much about the loss, feeling just happy to be able to get outside with space to run instead of sharing a field with the baseball and softball teams.

"It was just nice to see us play against some different competition, and we saw some things that we need to work on, so we'll start working on those things," Redwings coach Henry Wind said. "It was just kind of a fun game to watch."

Both teams got a piece of the frame in the first half, York hitting a post in the third minute and Benet knocking a shot off the crossbar in the 21st, but neither could ripple the net, mustering only a few shots.

In the second half the teams gave each other's goalkeeper more work, but York clearly had the better chances to score.

"We had a couple of chances there, just wide and stuff, but really golden chances we didn't have," Wind said.

"We've been working our butts off at practice every day, so it feels really good to go home with our first win," Ordonez added.
