Antioch edges Prairie Ridge for first win

Antioch's softball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday, and it was against a quality opponent.

Allie Anttila's RBI single and Cat Dinklenburg's run-scoring groundout in the top of the fifth inning provided the offense, and pitcher Olivia Duehr made the tallies stand up, as the Sequoits edged visiting Prairie Ridge 2-1.

Antioch (1-1) received a 2-for-2 performance from Bailan Reynolds, while Lauren Moore had a double.

Duehr, who stranded two runners on base in the sixth, when the Wolves cut their deficit in half, pitched a complete-game 5-hitter. The junior struck out seven and walked two.

Carmel 8, Woodstock North 0: Senior ace Rachel Tack struck out 10 and allowed 1 hit over 61/3 innings, as the Corsairs won their season opener.

Sophomore Kelley Dodge and freshman Skyler Zak each had a single, an RBI and 2 runs scored.

Loyola 5, Stevenson 4: Ashley Niedermayer homered and Amanda Jaegers doubled for the Patriots (0-2), who suffered a heartbreaking loss.

Loyola, the defending Class 4A state champion, scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the nonconference win. The Ramblers got back-to-back homers in the seventh from Jenny Edwards and Maggie Mullen.

"We fared well against last year's state champion," Stevenson coach Larry Friedrichs said. "That's one way to look at it."
