BG pair combine for no-hitter
Jeremy Salzman and Dan Recht made quite the mound duo Friday.
The Buffalo Grove pitchers combined to no-hit visiting Clemente as the Bison captured a 5-0 nonconference baseball victory in their season opener.
Salzman worked five innings, striking out eight and walking two. Recht came on for two innings of relief with a strikeout and a walk.
Sophomore Richie Zringibl threw out a Clemente runner at the plate to end the sixth inning.
Providing BG offensive support was Greg Sanders, who was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Teammate Ryan Nisbet also was 2-for-3, and Steve Pollakov added a double.
Barrington 2, York 1 (6 innings): Barrington held on for a thrilling 2-1 nonconference victory over visiting York, and it took a defensive gem to nail down the triumph.
York threatened in the top of the sixth when Matt Williams tried to score the tying run. But Broncos shortstop Jim Cook cut Williams down at the plate with his relay throw. The game was then called because of darkness.
Rob McDonnell was the winning pitcher, working 5 innings with 13 strikeouts. He allowed 2 hits, 1 earned run and a walk.
The Broncos' Anthony Brignola had a double.
Highland Park 9, Palatine 8 (6 innings): Despite doubles from Cody Bobbit and Jim Smearman, Palatine (1-1) dropped a 9-8 nonconference road decision to Highland Park.
