Kempel sharp, but Vernon Hills falls

Vernon Hills' baseball team got its season started Wednesday, and despite a strong outing on the mound by Scott Kempel, the Cougars dropped a 2-0 decision to Waukegan.

Kempel pitched 51/3 innings, allowing only 1 hit while striking out eight and walking one.

Vernon Hills threatened multiple times, including with two men on in the seventh. But Waukegan shortstop Bobby Berrera fielded Chris Marras' screamer and made a nice play for his eighth assist of the game.

Zack Kisley, Eric Oberwise and Ryan Knopoff had singles for Vernon Hills.
