Join Dist. 214 Alternative School in cancer fundraiser Wednesday

District 214's Forest View Alternative School staff members John Schwarz and Scott Scholten, with the support of their colleagues, have organized an important fundraiser event for cancer research and awareness, "St. Baldrick's Day."

The event will take place on Wednesday, March 17, at 10 a.m. in the theater of Forest View Educational Center at 2121 S. Goebbert Rd. in Arlington Heights.

That day, staff and students from FVAS, Vanguard School and the Newcomer Center will come together to donate money, get a haircut or have their heads shaved, all in the name of fighting cancer.

A minimum of 10 inches of hair will be collected from participants and donated to Locks of Love, an organization that provides wigs for cancer patients.

Forest View's building goal is $1,000 but organizers anticipate and hope for an even greater amount to be collected.

Krista Paul, District 214 Internship Coordinator at Forest View Educational Center, has invited students from Empire Beauty School in Arlington Heights (who are also students in Districts 214, 211, and 220) to assist in the snipping, shearing, and shaving of tresses.

To organize and participate in an event of this significance is especially important to Schwarz, whose grandfather was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2005 and died the following year.

"Every year since my grandfather passed I have shaved my head in March to support awareness of this event," said Schwarz. "He was a big part of my life and I can say that he would be very proud of me for what I am doing to fight this horrific disease. I want this disease stopped and any money raised is a blessing."

The St. Baldrick's Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. Government. From 2005-2009 the foundation raised nearly $42,000,000. Last year over $16,600,000 was raised and this year thus far, about $4,000,000 and counting.
