Super beginning for Barrington

The 37th area softball season got underway Monday at the Fields of Dreams in Barrington.

All nine Barrington starters had at least 1 hit as the Fillies blanked Maine West 14-0 in 5 innings of the opening game of the annual Spring Fling softball tourney.

Junior Kiley Dolezal threw a 3-hitter with 6 strikeouts for Barrington, which was led on offense by senior Nora Logue (3-for-4, 3 doubles, 2 RBI), junior Kiersten Tinkoff (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and junior Colleen Shandley (3-for-4, 3 runs, RBI).

Sophomore Kelsey Kazmier and Dolezal each had 2 hits and junior Elizabeth Owen doubled for the winners, who will play their semifinal game on Wednesday.

The Hersey-Warren and Zion-Benton-Glenbrook North quarterfinals were postponed until today at 4:30 p.m.

Barrington will play the winner of the Hersey-Warren game while Lake Zurich, a 5-4 winner over Deerfield on Monday, will face the winner of the Zion-Glenbrook North game.

The championship is set for Thursday.

"Our kids played well," said Fillies coach Perry Peterson. "It certainly was a great way to start the season. Our girls were very excited to play and proved it on the field."

The Fillies' defense prevented a double when outfielder Kazmier fielded a base hit and threw the ball to freshman shortstop Loren Krzysko, who then tossed to first baseman Tinkoff who made the tag on the batter.

Senior Michelle Marlega (bunt), sophomore Katie Fitzgerald and junior Olivia Beers each had base hits for Maine West.
