Hawks may turn to Boynton to replace injured Campbell
The Blackhawks have placed defenseman Nick Boynton on re-entry waivers for the purpose of recalling him from Rockford to replace the injured Brian Campbell.
Boynton, acquired from Anaheim on March 2 for future considerations, would need to clear waivers to be eligible to play for the Hawks.
Meanwhile, the NHL conducted a hearing on Monday for Washington's Alex Ovechkin to review his hit from behind on Campbell in Sunday's game at the United Center that left the Hawks' defenseman with a broken collarbone and rib damage.
Campbell is expected to miss at least the remainder of the regular season.
The Hawks would not confirm on Monday the seriousness of Campbell's injury. A team spokesman said Campbell was to be examined by the team doctor on Monday and that the club would make an announcement on Tuesday.
Hawks general manager Stan Bowman on Monday refused media requests to comment on the Campbell situation.
The Hawks could be down two defensemen for Wednesday's game at Anaheim with Kim Johnsson also questionable with an upper body injury.
Ovechkin earned a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for the hit on Campbell. It was the two-time MVP's third game misconduct of the season. He received his first on Nov. 26 for a hit on Buffalo's Patrick Kaleta, and his second three days later for hitting Carolina's Tim Gleason below the knee.
