Focus of schools should be on basics

Barrington School District 220 needs to reconsider its educational priorities.  As cost saving measures, the Board of Education and the superintendent are planning to increase the size of the elementary school classes, to reduce the number of elementary school teachers, and to eliminate two reading teachers at the primary school level.

The Board is, however, maintaining all athletic and activity programs at the high school and is keeping the numerous low-enrollment elective courses.

The foundation of a good education is not a mega sports complex, Barrington Sports High; the foundation of a good education is learning how to read and how to improve reading skills at the elementary school level.
