'Idol's' DeWyze lives to sing another day

The "American Idol" judges love Lee DeWyze, and apparently, the show's 29 million viewers do, too.

The 23-year-old Mount Prospect musician was voted into the show's Top 12 Thursday night, after performing his own unique arrangement of Owl City's "Fireflies" the night before.

DeWyze is now among the six male and six female finalists competing for the American Idol title.

While four of the Top 24 contestants had Chicago area connections, now only DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox remain. Bowersox is from Ohio, and briefly lived in Chicago before moving back home.

On Thursday night, "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest called DeWyze "one of the lucky ones to make it out of Chicago." Based on the adoration he's getting from judges and viewers, it doesn't seem like he's coming home anytime soon.

The show also saw two surprise eliminations in Katelyn Epperly and Lilly Scott. Scott and Epperly were tagged as early front-runners by the judges, but both suffered shaky performances Tuesday night.

The guys sent home were Todrick Hall, who never seemed to catch on with the judges and Alex Lambert, who had trouble overcoming his shaky nerves.

The Top 12 takes on the Rolling Stones at 7 p.m. Tuesday on Fox.
