Don't be bullied by a vocal few on coyotes
As a resident of Wheaton for all my 40 years, I respect and appreciate all forms of life and feel passionate that humans should make every attempt to live in harmony with nature. Please consider these points regarding the current coyote hysteria.
1. The site of the coyote mistaking a pet for prey is adjacent to unincorporated land adjoining Chicago Golf Course. In this setting, responsible pet owners would never leave pets unattended without the protection of a fence keeping predators out. The DuPage County Animal Control and Welfare Laws specifically states "We recommend dogs be confined outside behind a fence rather than on a tie-out to protect them from other animals" and "Keep them on a leash or behind a fence at all times. Never let them run loose."
This coyote hysteria wouldn't even exist if all pet owners abided by this code and acted responsibly on behalf of their pets. A fence with visible boundaries speaks volumes - the commitment you have made to protect and care for your pets.
2. The predator-prey relationship is an integral part of our ecosystem. The coyotes provide the valuable (and free) service of keeping the feral cat, rabbit, rodent and Canada geese population in balance with their habitat.
3. I propose a public awareness campaign or possibly hiring an unbiased professional to tag and count Wheaton's coyotes so a decision can be made based on scientific research before making the disrespectful decision to kill. The coyotes deserve it.
Human ignorance and irresponsibility, not assertive coyotes, have led to the hysteria. Please do not let the bullying voice of a shameful few - so out of touch with nature - influence your opinion regarding these beautiful creatures.
