Scouting Neuqua Valley vs. East Aurora
Class 4A Plainfield East regional final
No. 2 Neuqua Valley (27-2) vs. No. 7 East Aurora (18-9)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Outlook: Pack the place in Plainfield. Seeking its fifth straight regional title, Neuqua Valley will try to contain rampaging East Aurora junior guard Ryan Boatright, who scored 40 points Wednesday in the Tomcats' 83-72 victory over No. 10 seed Naperville Central. Neuqua coach Todd Sutton suggested his team needs to keep Boatright and guard Letrell "Snoop" Viser under 100 points. He probably wasn't kidding. Neuqua's Rahjan Muhammad drew the assignment on Boatright (Kyle Pembrook and Jim Stocki took Viser) in a Feb. 12 Upstate Eight Conference game Neuqua won 74-64 despite committing 23 turnovers. In his first game back after sitting two with an ankle injury, Neuqua "held" Boatright to 27 points. While 6-foot-5 forward Dwayne Evans had 17 rebounds, 13 points and 5 assists, Neuqua's top scorer was 6-5 center Kareem Amedu, who scored 22 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the floor, wearing out East Aurora's interior defense and helping extend a 36-32 halftime lead. Sutton called East Aurora 6-4 senior Tramell Weathersby the key tonight with his inside potential; 6-5 Keenan McGhee is also active. In Neuqua's 67-55 playoff-opening win over Plainfield North, Amedu had 17 points and, after missing two games with an Achilles' injury, Evans 16. "We must win the boards and protect the ball to have a chance" against East Aurora, Sutton said.
