Refreshing honesty in local government
We all knew, but now we know for sure what lies behind the proliferation of the red light cameras - revenue generation. This was publicly admitted by the village of Winfield in an article discussing ways to fix and maintain their local streets.
In an article in the Feb. 28 Daily Herald, "Winfield faces bumpy road," Village Manager Curt Barrett said in that the village will be asking for a tax increase on this November's ballot in order to fix and maintain the village streets since the current tax sources have declined in this poor economy.
Good planning dictates always having a Plan B. What was utterly amazing was the admission that the village has also looked into other ways to increase revenue should the referendum not be successful. The possibilities include creation of a vehicle sticker program and the installation of red light cameras.
It is refreshing to see such honesty in local government.
