Support comprehensive tax reform in Illinois

The General Assembly is making vital decisions on the state budget and the future of Illinois.

Illinois' projected deficit is $12.8 billion, half of the state's budget. Although some legislators suggest that we can cut spending to "live within our means" to solve this crisis, a structural deficit of this magnitude cannot be fixed by scaling back services we all depend on. The shortfall has already resulted in cuts in vital services that affect our students, families and communities.

The League of Women Voters supports HB 174, or equal legislation, for comprehensive tax reform that will raise adequate revenues and make taxes fairer for low- and moderate-income families. We urge legislators to show leadership, joining those who already support HB 174, and move Illinois toward fiscal health.
