Class 4A Libertyville sectional championship
When: Today at 7:30 p.m.
Who: No. 2 Hersey (25-7) vs. No. 8 Barrington (19-12)
Advancement: Winner to the Streamwood supersectional at 7:30 p.m. Monday vs. the winner of the Huntley sectional (Geneva vs. Rockford Boylan).
Outlook: Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro and Hersey coach Mary Fendley are the deans of the Mid-Suburban West and East, respectively. Barreiro, a former multisport athlete at Elk Grove High School, guided the Fillies to a 2000 sectional title and has 295 career wins. She is coaching in her 11th sectional in 17 seasons. Her Fillies have notched wins over top-seeded Wheeling and No. 5 Prospect in the sectional. Hersey stopped the Fillies twice during the regular season. The Huskies won 50-36 on Dec. 1 in Arlington Heights and then 60-53 on Feb. 9 in the MSL second-place crossover game at Barrington. Fendley, who has 247 career wins, brings the Huskies to a sectional for the eighth time in her 12 seasons. The former Rolling Meadows three-sport standout guided the Huskies to championships in the Wheaton North and Season's End tourneys and a runner-up up spot in the Maine West Tip-Off Classic. Her club is led by one of the top juniors in the state, 5-foot-9 guard Megan Rogowski, who averages nearly 22 points as the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,600 points. Seniors Maddie Swan and Kathyrn Korff are also strong rebounders while senior point guard Julia Fredian (also a soccer standout) directs the offense along with always-hustling backcourt partner Andrea Perkins, also a senior. In addition to those five, juniors Brittany Pittas and Eileen Zydek have also had double-figure scoring games. Senior Kari Tunney has provides depth in the backcourt. Trailing by 2 points after three quarters in Tuesday's semifinal, Hersey outscored No. 3 Libertyville 24-4 margin in the fourth to win going away, 61-43. Barrington also used a 12-1 run to close its 42-30 win over Prospect in the Monday semifinal. Junior guard Abby Kirchoff, also a highly-rated junior guard, is the Fillies' top scorer. She tossed a game-high 16 points (10 in the first half) while senior Emily Harris and junior Shelby Whigham each added 7. Junior Brooke Chandor (4 rebounds, 3 assists) had a big blocked shot in the final minute. Junior Sarah Mass provided her usual heads-up floor play with 3 steals and 3 rebounds while junior Sam Maasarani and sophomore Nicole Collins popped in big 3-pointers.
Tip-in: Barrington junior guard Sarah Mass is the daughter of former Hersey girls basketball coach Linda Mass, who guided the school to its only sectional championship in 1994 when that team finished 27-2. and was an all-area player for the Huskies.
Coincidentally, a leading scorer for that 1994 team was Corinne Vossel, who held the Hersey scoring record with 1,527 points until last week when Megan Rogowski surpassed it.
