We're making gains in malaria battle

As I was reading all over the media on Tuesday about the new discovery that malaria had contributed to the death of the famous child-pharaoh King Tut, I thought about how long the disease has been around. Isn't it about time we get rid of it?

As a local member of the advocacy group ONE (one.org), I have learned a great deal about malaria and other preventable, treatable diseases and what can be done. According to Malaria No More, every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria in Africa. But there is hope. Just in the past few years Ethiopia and Rwanda have cut malaria-related mortality by 50 percent.

We can end malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. This means really get rid of it. Forever. Because thousands of years ago, a pharaoh may have died of malaria, but tomorrow, a child in Africa does not have to.
