McMahon joins Slaughter as new owner of IFL team
It appears the "Punky QB" and "Da Coach" will still have some differences, especially when it comes to deciding which indoor football team to support.
The Chicago Slaughter announced Friday that Jim McMahon, the quarterback of the 1985 Super Bowl champion Bears, will join their ownership group.
Fellow 1985 Chicago Bears defensive tackle Steve "Mongo" McMichael serves as the team's head coach and Jarrett Payton, son of legendary Chicago Bears great Walter Payton, is the team's new running back for its Indoor Football League season.
The Slaughter, which went undefeated in winning the CIFL Championship last season, will compete for attention with the Chicago Rush, which includes former Bears coach Mike Ditka in its Arena Football League ownership group.
"I've been a winner throughout my football career and I plan on continuing that success with the Chicago Slaughter," McMahon said Friday. "I am excited to join my friend and former teammate Coach McMichael and Jarrett Payton in bringing another football championship back to Chicago."
McMichael believes fans will be excited about the relationship.
"Chicago football fans have another opportunity to see a McMahon, McMichael and Payton triple-threat in action. Get to the Sears Centre early on the 27th and have those cameras ready, folks... you are not going to want to miss this," McMichael said.
The Slaughter will open the 2010 season at home on Feb. 27 against the Rochester Raiders at 7 p.m. at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.
