Car theft suspect nabbed before leaving Schaumburg

Schaumburg police used six squad cars to swarm in on a vehicle reported stolen from the northwest corner of the village near the intersection of Golf and Meacham roads Monday morning.

Jamie Sanchez, 18, of the 400 block of South Park Boulevard in Streamwood, was charged with criminal trespass to a motor vehicle.

Schaumburg Deputy Police Chief Paul Rizzo said the Class A misdemeanor was the highest charge that the Cook County state's attorney's office would approve.

Rizzo said officers received the call of a car stolen from the 2300 block of John Rolfe Drive in the village at 10:09 a.m. Monday. He was stopped on the other side of town six minutes later, Rizzo said.

The person who called in the theft reported seeing a stranger take his neighbor's car while it was warming up in front of the house.

"This is a cautionary tale about warming up your vehicle with the door unlocked," Rizzo said. "It only takes five seconds, they tell me, to steal a running vehicle."
