Hefty bond set in Fox River Grove murder case

The man accused of the first murder in Fox River Grove's history will remain behind bars at least through the weekend after a judge handed down a hefty bond Saturday.

Martin R. Green received a $3 million bond while appearing before Judge John Bolger Saturday morning at a tiny courtroom inside the McHenry County jail. Green must post $300,000 to get out of jail. He told Bolger he would be unable to do so.

Green, 26, faces two counts of first-degree murder alleging he killed his stepmother, 52-year-old Patricia L. McNamara, by beating her to death with a hammer.

Police found McNamara dead inside her residence on Gladys Avenue shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday. Green was apprehended a short time later after fleeing the home and jumping into the nearby Fox River. Green was treated at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington before police transferred him to the jail.

Bolger informed Green he faces 20 to 60 years in prison and up to $50,000 in fines if convicted. Green will appear in court again at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Green initially indicated he wasn't interested in having a public defender represent him, but Bolger appointed one anyway pending Green's ability to find outside legal counsel or represent himself.

A handful of people watched Saturday morning's proceedings in a room separated from the court. The proceedings were only viewable through a thick glass window. Only Bolger's microphone was audible.

Green waved to one man in the audience at the conclusion of the court appearance. The man who waved back denied knowing Green as he left the jail.

The prosecution did not make themselves available for questions following the court appearance. The entire event Saturday morning lasted only a few minutes.
