North Aurora Lions: On Jan. 26, the North Aurora Lions club presented awards to two members of Herget Middle School in Aurora. Rachel Lally and Amamnda Gaffino received the John Adams Service Award for their outstanding contribution to The Herget Leos club. The service club volunteered for many projects. Lions Candy Day, trash cleanup at Herget, penny wars collecting items for Paws With a Cause and Breakfast with Santa to just mention a few. The Leos club offers vital support to the North Aurora Lions club.

Elburn Lions: The Elburn Lions Club hosts bingo every Friday at the clubhouse, 500 Filmore St., Elburn. The doors open at 5 p.m. Early Bird Bingo starts at 6:30 p.m., with regular games beginning at 7 p.m. Twelve regular games are offered as well as three progressive and one split the pot raffles. American Legion Post 75: The Fox River-Geneva American Legion Post 75 will offer a "Friday Fish Fry" every week through April 2. They will put a rock that weighs about 30 pounds on the ice-covered pond near the Fox River at the Mill Race Inn sometime in mid-February. For $1, guess the day and time that it will fall back through the ice and you win half the pot. The "Rotary rock" is currently at the Citizen Kane restaurant, 330 W. North Aurora Mothers Club: The North Aurora Mothers Club will host its annual fundraiser - The North Aurora Winter Gala - from 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Fox Valley Country Club in North Aurora. It will include hors d'oeuvres, dinner buffet, open bar, raffles and silent auction, with entertainment provided by Music by Design and a special performance by Moves Dance Studio. In addition, there will be a pre-raffle before the gala; tickets are being sold now. The first prize is $1,000; tickets are $10 each and the winner does not need to be present at the gala.

As the club's largest fundraising event, the proceeds from the Winter Gala will go toward supporting the community. Since its inception in 1997, the North Aurora Mothers Club has dispersed more than $150,000 toward programs benefiting local children and their families as well as the police department, fire department, library and community outreach programs. The club is currently seeking contributions from individuals and business for the Winter Gala. Those interested in helping make a difference in the community can make a donation or to attend the event and purchase tickets in advance, visit northauroramothersclub.org. On Saturday, Feb. 20, join the "Gull Frolic" at the Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club. The Illinois Ornithological Society, celebrating its ninth year, is sponsoring this event which includes food (including "Sea Gull Stew"), booths and a view of lots and lots of gulls, ducks, and other water fowl in the harbor. Batavia Woodcarving Club: The Batavia Woodcarving Club will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with a show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 in Paxton Hall at the Batavia Congregational Church, 21 S. Batavia Ave. There will be numerous carvings exhibited, demonstrations and carvings for sale. Admission and parking are free. Longtime Batavia resident Bob Hawse, started the club with a few friends in his garage when he retired from pattern-making in 1985. "We would just get together to carve, share techniques and talk," Hawse said. The highlight of the evening in those days was when his late wife, Hazel, brought out whatever she had baked for them that night.

The club has grown to more than 20 members now with regular meetings from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays at Bethany Lutheran Church Elder Care Center, at Wilson and Lincoln. Members skill levels vary, as does their interests. Everything from realistic ducks or songbirds, to Santas, Scandinavian figures, relief scenes, cartoon characters, and the occasional witch or Frankenstein monster. Some members have won blue ribbons at regional shows, and taught classes, while some are just beginning. The club has never had a formal exhibition as a group before. The Batavia Woodcarving Club does have a small booth every year during Windmill City Days to auction off an annual group cane project, raising more than $2,000 to date for local charities. Zonta Club: On Tuesday, March 2, the Zonta Club of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia invites the community to a panel discussion on "Breaking the Silence on Domestic Abuse" from 7 to 9 p.m. at Prairie Landing Golf Club, 2325 Longest Drive in West Chicago. Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club: Looking for a way to save money on your children's clothing this spring? Be sure to check out the Tri-Cities Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club spring resale on Saturday, March 13.

The resale features gently used spring clothing for boys and girls, from infant through preteen. Other gently used items for sale include shoes, holiday outfits, dress-up, toys, videos, outdoor equipment, bikes, strollers, baby furniture, maternity clothing, books and other items for babies or children. Beverages and home baked goods will be available for purchase at the sale as well.

The resale is a great way to find bargains on gently used children's items and typically attracts hundreds of shoppers. It also provides a way for club members to sell some of the items their children no longer use or have outgrown.

The sale runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 13 at Mooseheart Fieldhouse, located on Route 31 and Mooseheart Road between Batavia and North Aurora. Admission to the sale is $1 and items with yellow tickets will sell for half price from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Shoppers are encouraged to come early and bring laundry baskets for their shopping convenience. No backpacks, bags or closed containers are permitted at the sale.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale is given back to the club to cover club expenses and, in part, to support club events such as a breakfast with Santa and a summer picnic. Money also has been donated to various groups, including a homeless shelter, or to aid families in need.

Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors: The Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors Club invites those with an interest in knowing more about the area to a get-acquainted membership coffee at 10 a.m. Friday, March 5 at the home of a board member. New activities and interest groups are added frequently by members.

It is a nonprofit social, and philanthropic, organization for women in the area who are interested in meeting and making new friends through various social and fundraising activities.

This year, the charity is the Lazarus House, the area's only emergency shelter that is open 365 days per year. The group meets monthly for a luncheon during the months of September through June. Each monthly meeting includes a meet-and-greet, before a short general business meeting, a luncheon, and an entertaining and informative program. The annual membership fee of $25 provides you with a membership directory and a monthly newsletter that recaps the upcoming monthly events and activities. Aurora Junior Woman's Club: The Aurora Junior Woman's Club, together with Aurora Children's Dental Service, is presenting their 51st musical production, "Sleeping Beauty," at 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20 in the West Aurora High School auditorium, 1201 W. The Aurora Junior Woman's Club/Aurora Children's Dental Services is a nonprofit organization made up of women dedicated to serving the needs of Aurora's children for more than 50 years. Each year, they stage a play to entertain the families of the Fox Valley. The cost of the tickets is deliberately kept low so families that ware on a limited budget can experience the joy of seeing live performances. These plays are rewritten, edited, performed, directed and staged by the club members. The profits from the performances go directly back to the community in the form of dental work for children who otherwise would not be able to afford the care. It also funds donations to school theater programs, Make-A-Wish programs and other local charitable endeavors.

Geneva Garden Club: The Geneva Garden Club has announced that applications are now being taken for its annual scholarship of $2,000. Many deserving Geneva students have received the Geneva Garden Club scholarship to support their continuing education over the years. A qualified applicant must be a resident of Geneva ZIP code 60134 who is a graduating high school senior or current college student intending to pursue an education in horticulture, landscaping, environmental sustainability or a closely related field.

The immediate past recipient may reapply one time. The 2010 scholarship application is available online under the scholarship link at genevagardenclub.com. The completed application package is due on Monday, April 5.
